Willakaville Amazing Adventures of Astronomical Awesomeness Volume 1 Mathew F Heinecke 9781507585467 Books

As some other reviewers have noted, this book faces the challenge of its content being aimed at an age a tad younger than its reading level, which will make its readership decidedly “niche”.

That said, I’d highly recommend it for those who are in that small bracket; as for me, my six-year-old son and I have been reading them together at bedtime.

The stories contained in this book certainly will promoting thinking in young minds that are all-too-often discouraged from doing so by having ideals handed to them on a plate, instead of the more bait-and-switch method used in these tails. It’s good to be able to challenge information one is handed, and that’s a skill rarely championed in schools.

In the category of criticism, I must note that it’s not really the sort of book that I think adults or teens would be likely to enjoy, and this could stand to have been made more clear. Furthermore, a lot of the dialogue is quite clunky and wooden, as the ideas are being presented as more important than the flow and feel of the stories and their characters. Which they are, of course, but it does leave the book looking somewhat unpolished.

All the same, it seems to be aiming for something between Aesop’s Fables and Gödel-Escher-Bach, and the job it’s doing is an admirable one.

Willakaville Amazing Adventures of Astronomical Awesomeness Volume 1 Mathew F Heinecke 9781507585467 Books Reviews

Willakavillle Amazing Adventures of Astronomical Awesomeness by Bald Guy is one of the books that would certainly entice readers of young ages. I loved how friendly this book was. It offers stories that would take the readers to different worlds and experience exciting adventures.

The writing was good and decent, although there are parts that could still be improved. But it’s definitely reader-friendly, especially to kids. Although most adults would not find this an exciting read, I think the children will do because of the amazing things that are written in it. Plus, they’d get to laugh every once in a while while reading this because there really are hilarious scenes. I am definitely recommending this book to young readers. It’s certainly an enjoyable read and is truly worthy of the children’s time. They can also learn a lot of things. Reading this book will be the perfect past-time to them.
Mathew Heinecke (AKA Bald Guy) has written a group of silly stories for this first volume of Willakaville. I’m not sure if the tagline ‘Amazing Adventures of Astronomical Awesomeness’ exactly fits the actual stories, some of them wouldn’t really be all that awesome if they happened to you, but the stories are way over the top and goofy to the point of absurdity…but luckily, that is something kids actually like. There were bits here and there that brought a chuckle out of me, although I can’t say I was crazy about each and every story. I felt like this is a collection that has a few really good parts and then a lot of average parts as far as humor for children goes. There were parts too that I felt did a whole lot more telling than showing, although that can be a hard thing to avoid in short stories since you have to fit everything into a rather short format. I felt like the exposition setting up each story was a bit long as well, with information that wasn’t really needed to get the point of the story itself. Overall, I decided to give the book three stars because it isn’t bad, but it isn’t fabulous either.
What a fun and entertaining book this is. Willakaville Amazing Adventures of Astronomical Awesomeness by Bald Guy is a wacky collection of stories for the younger set. Not only do these stories entertain and confound, they offer simple moral lessons. Highly creative and written to amaze, dazzle and befuddle, most of the stories have a dilemma that must be solved. Why is there a huge tomato stalking and aggressively dismantling the town of Willakaville? Why does a young, unpopular girl dreams strange dreams of a talking turtle? Sometimes there aren't enough answers for these baffling questions, these preposterous things just happen. Overall, the big take away from this collection is to be nice to everyone, and life should improve for you as a young person. I was a bit troubled by some of the characters' going off into closets and/or rooms with janitors and teachers, as a parent these actions raise red flags, but beyond that, this is a completely enjoyable collection.
If you are trying to find a book that will spark interest for reading in your child, this is as good as it gets. I simply cannot imagine a kid that would find these stories boring.
The book first surprised me with the sheer length, it on the thicker side when it comes to children's books. If you are worried that a child might have problems with following it because of that, don't be. The book is actually a collection of separate stories that sometimes share characters or other traits, but mostly they can stand alone. Every one of them is such a delight, so imaginative, witty, bright, colorful and silly in the best possible way. The problems that characters face and solve are very unique, and unique is the best word I can think of for the whole experience with this book. I am really curious where will the author go next with this series, I just hope that he can think of more stories that are on the same level of pure imaginative bliss.
I believe young people, especially boys, would enjoy these short stories written by “Bald Guy”. From my view point as a parent and teacher, the vocabulary and humor is suited for those ages 8-11. It would be a put-off for those adults who don’t think children should or would laugh at bodily noises. I did not come across inappropriate language, but there are multiple lessons within each story. “Freaky Freddie” is an excellent story to teach children about friendship and the dangers of prejudging an individual about their appearance.

I found the stories interesting within this whimsical little town, Willakaville. I was almost wishing there really was a white powder that would make people more pleasant to be around, like in the story “Behaving Badly”. I pictured the town of Mayberry, from The Andy Griffith Show, throughout this book.
