Hooked Liz Fichera Books

This modern day Romeo and Juliette was enthralling. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down and I read the whole thing in one day. In fact, when my Kindle battery died with only 2 1/2 chapters to go, I took some drastic measures. (because I'm having issues charging it and can't sit and hold it while plugged in) I plugged it in, did all the little crazy things needed to get the charging light to come on, and then read the rest while standing beside my desk, bent over sideways to get the right angle.
And it was worth it!

Fichera does a great job keeping the tension moving forward with misunderstandings, prejudices, teen hormones, bullying best friends, family issues, and so much more. She pulls you into Fred and Ryan's world with ease. Everything is believable and rings true.

Bonus Points:
It is a modern day Romeo and Juliette themed story, but you don't ever think, "Oh, this is like Romeo and Juliette" while reading.
The sport is GOLF! Loved that she didn't make Fred a football player or something else a little more mainstream.
I loved that Fred was Native American. Fichera did an excellent job portraying Fred's mixed feelings about where she fit in the world, or which world she wanted.
Great family dynamics--the good and the bad.
Ryan's best friend? SCARY and demented.

I give Hooked by Liz Fichera a 5 for keeping me hooked.

Hooked Liz Fichera Books Reviews

This is a series, but each book will have its own H/h. Book 2 (Played) is due out in 2014 and will be about the sister and friend of this book's H/h.

Fredricka Oday, "Fred", "Daughter of the River People" (16 years/Junior in high school/Native American/black hair/black eyes) has grown up on the Gila River Indian Reservation in Arizona with her father and brother, and her unstable, alcoholic mom. She has been attending the "regular white" high school only because there is no high school on the reservation. Fred is a self-taught golf player with "a heck of a golf swing". Her father works as a groundskeeper at the local Country club and that's where she captures the attention of her high school's golf coach. He begs her to join the school's all (privileged white) boys' varsity golf team. In doing so she kicks one player off the team, Sam. Ryan Berenger (16-17 years/student/blond hair/blue eyes) is Sam's best friend and he's not happy about it. But soon his feelings are torn between his loyalty to Sam and his growing attraction and fascination with Fred. The story goes from there.

The story is alternating between Ryan's and Fred's POV.

Fred is a wonderful heroine. Growing up with a volatile mom and isolated on a reservation, faced with prejudice, has made her timid and reserved - invisible. But underneath the surface of a girl hiding her face and twirling her hair lies a smart, beautiful, resolute, enchanting, and proud young lady. Golf started as an escape from her mom/home, but soon developed into a passion. No one on her reservation has ever gone further than high school. The last several years she has worked hard in school and practiced her golf game with the hopes that somehow it might open the door for her to attend college. I was so rooting for her dreams to come true...

Ryan has grown up privileged in comparison. At first glance he's a guy that parties, hangs out with the in crowd, maintains OK grades. He kind of goes along with status quo - girlfriend by default and sitting by when his friend, Sam, kept on seeking revenge on Fred. He is not a bad person, but he has a lot of growing up to do. We soon discover that he is frustrated and unhappy. He has anger issues, mainly directed towards his parents. He is almost lethargic in his attitude towards college and his future. His one passion in life is golf. Fred changed the game -she was his game changer.

I might have wished that story spanned a longer period of time. For me Ryan's growth and development wasn't fast and deep enough. I did not connect with him the way I connected with Fred.

The book is well written and the story flows easily. This is a YA story and overall it was an enjoyable read.

Would I recommend this book Yes.
Would I re-read this book No.
Would I read future books by this author Yes.
The story alternates between Fred (Fredricka) and Ryan's viewpoints. Their home lives are complicated; Fred (Daughter of the River People) lives on the Rez with her parents, and her mother is an unhappy alcoholic; Fred finds escape in her love for golf, and she is good--so good she's recruited by the golf coach at the local high school.. (You're going to learn a lot about golf; there's a glossary in the back of the book.)

Ryan starts out as a typical rebellious and unhappy teen (he blames it on his parents); and he is as angry--but not as much as his friend Seth, when Fred replaces Seth on the golfing team. Oh, yes, there's prejudice between the Rez folk and the white townies... And Ryan's family is rich, while Fred lives in a trailer in the desert. Good background about life on the reservation and in the desert. There are only a few Indians attending the high school, and they are sympathetic (I liked them, especially Yolanda and her friend Kelly). And I love Riley, Ryan's little sister. Oh, and George Trueblood. And Trevor, Fred's protective brother. Even the parents are likeable--later.

I didn't have much hope for Fred and Ryan's relationship; they're drawn to each other, but that is complicated because of their backgrounds--and Seth's friendship. Will Ryan grow up? Will Fred persevere despite the persecution (Did I mention that Seth is mean and vindictive?) and prejudice? There is a suspenseful and satisfying ending.
