Corner Booth Chautona Havig 9781508979791 Books

I enjoyed the story. Sometimes it dragged a bit, but this element also made it seem more realistic and allowed the characters enough time to develop, grow and change without unrealistic and superficial surprises. The story has an unique plot with how the main two characters meet and keep on meeting in the corner booth. The author manages to keep it authentic and believable without having to add unrealistic drama every now and then. The author seem to have a well developed insight into the hearts, minds and motives of peoples and flesh out her characters well and realistically with both strong and weak points, which make the characters quite likable and real.

Corner Booth Chautona Havig 9781508979791 Books Reviews

Having read a few of Chautona's books, and having this was praised by my best friend, I decided to grab it when it was on sale. I'm glad I did. It was a different kind of story. I love to talk, but I also listen so I could feel for both the characters. Their struggles pulled my heart, made me think a little more and I found myself wanting the story to end so I could find out what happened, but not wanting it to end because I didn't want to leave the characters.
Yep, I'll read this one again.
What a sweet, romantic story! Wouldn't it be wonderful if the world was full of people who listen? Ms. Havig never fails to bring conviction to my heart in one way or another without "preaching". Certainly the art of listening is lost in our society today. I am most surely one who lacks this ability. After reading this book I am committed to make the effort to hone the skill of listening. Who knows how many blessings will come my way if I take my focus off myself and really listen to others with genuine interest and a loving ear? I hope many more readers will enjoy and learn from this wonderful story.
No, the book didn't put me to sleep. But I have this pet peeve about winking. It brings to mind that proverb about the troublemaker who "winks with his eye, signals with his feet..." I know; silly, isn’t it? But I’ve gotten into the habit of counting winks, and in this book there are thirty. I really don’t like when an author has a character wink – especially if they’re trying to reinforce that they just said something clever or funny. So annoying.

Otherwise, the book drew me in and kept my attention. It might have earned four stars if it hadn’t felt too long. The more the story dragged on and on, the less I liked the heroine and the more I doubted whether this relationship was a good one for the hero. He might've been better off with someone else. Oh, and strangely enough, when the ending finally came, it wasn’t that wonderful, heave-a-sigh moment I’d been waiting for. It just kind of ended.

I may read other books by Havig, but as much as I liked the idea of "Corner Booth," I won’t be reading it again.
I'd never read anything from this author, and I only found this book when it was (temporarily) free for . I usually throw the freebies to the Cloud for later. This one, however, I sent directly to my , and I'm VERY glad I did!

What I like MOST is that the story doesn't follow the same formula as nearly every clean romance that I've read in the past several months. You've read that book boy meets girl, they both know that they can never be together, they keep having "moments," they both know they can never be together (repeat last two steps at least four times), and they end up happy together. "Corner Booth" is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!

I appreciate that the author wrote a longer book (361 pages in print) in order to develop the characters--even the secondary characters--so the reader knows them. (Who doesn't know a "Rhonda"?) The characters have depth, they're authentic in having both positive and negative traits, and they are not predictable. Just as in real life, each character enters the story with baggage, which affects every relationship.

The romance is clean and sweet without being sticky-sweet or fluffy. The many of the characters are Christians, but they're not at all preachy. Even the not-so-nice characters express themselves clearly without using profanity.

"Corner Booth" is one of the best novels I've read in a long time!
Well, this didn't work out quite the way I expected--although I wasn't quite sure what I expected going in...

I liked a lot of things about this book--Carlie's and Dean's characters (for the most part), the slow and sweet way their relationship developed, the depth of concern and care that they showed for each other. Dean's continued silence struck me as a bit odd, especially when it became awkward/strained and particularly because he didn't have a real reason for it. Carlie frustrated me at times, especially in her relationship with Blaine and her continuing blindness to how toxic it was--not that her attitude was unbelievable, but it certainly wasn't fun to read. I did really appreciate the fact that her family relationships weren't as toxic as she saw them at first, and that once she came to a better understanding of her own worth, a lot of her relationships also began to heal. I also absolutely loved Dean's relationship with his stepfather--so beautiful!

A couple of things that bugged me more than a little bit--Dean's extensive explanation to his class of what was going on between himself and Carlie contained way too much information and seemed entirely unnecessary. Unless things have changed a lot since I was in college, the idea of students being allowed to demand an explanation on why their professor wasn't available for certain office hours or of him feeling it necessary to explain more than that he had an appointment during that time just felt very wrong. Also, there were some off-color comments by a minor character that were not condoned but definitely could have been done without.

3.5 stars

Content--scenes showing a toxic relationship (threats, belittling, some low-key physical bullying); mentions of having had sexual relations outside of marriage; mention of someone threatening to hire a stripper for a party; a violent crime and resulting wounds (not graphic); mention of divorce; mention of a death; a few kisses; social drinking
