Jeri Singleton’s hard work and intellect have brought her close to her dream of medical school, but at the cost of her young marriage. Vulnerable and alone, Jeri meets Ted Johnston, a sad and mysterious stranger who has abandoned the urban lifestyle to which she aspires. Ted has succeeded in the technological world Jeri values, yet he has lost his faith in science and technology. Drawn together irresistibly across a lonely ski slope, Ted and Jeri begin a quiet romance in the snow muted mountains of Colorado and quickly fall deeply in love.

Eager to experience Carnival, Jeri convinces Ted to join a group of libertine strangers on a Mardi Gras trip to New Orleans. As their love matures, with the parties and parades of carnival cascading around them, they begin making plans for a lifetime together. But they are unaware that the emotionless gears of the modern world are grinding inevitably closer to them.

Reminiscent of Anne Tyler’s Breathing Lessons and Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain, James J. Houts takes their stylistic conventions one step further in a mesmerizing depiction of the consequences of modern, technological life. Rich in detail with expertly developed characters, Carnival of Cannibals is a poignant and effecting novel of extraordinary depth and relevance.

Writers since Theocritus and Virgil have explored the conflict between art (now science) and nature. In “The Tempest,” William Shakespeare placed Prospero, an accomplished scientist with command over the elemental powers, into the wilderness of an undiscovered island. Humanity’s inherent dichotomy between the desire for technology and the love of nature is an enduring theme of Western literature. Never has the pastoral theme been more topical than in a world of nuclear wastes, ozone holes, Saturday night specials and the addiction of millions to refined drugs. Carnival of Cannibals brings the pastoral theme to our contemporary world.

This book makes you want to cast aside all your contrived modern day problems, and really take a look at what is important. A great combination of realism, romance, inspiration, and some soul searching moments. The strong writing really draws you in to the two main characters, and takes you on their separate and joined journey of hope and tragedy.

Carnival of Cannibals edition by James J Houts Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

What a pleasant surprise! By pure chance, I got a hold of this book and read it without any information about the book or the author. From the very beginning of the book, the main characters, Ted and Jeri, are likable and identifiable with easy to follow plot. There are lots of elements we can all relate to, whether it is for real or fantasy. The dichotomy between technology and simplicity, euphoria and inescapable tragedy, love and friendship versus isolation and selfishness are the issues we deal with every day, and the author deals with these issues in a matter of fact way but at the same time hit them in the right spots without callousness. It was a truly enjoyable journey with heightened visual descriptive details.
The opening chapter of Carnival of Cannibals, lets the reader know that something truly life-changing is going to happen between these two characters, Jeri and Ted, and to look forward to getting to know them. I really enjoyed this book, however, I will warn you that I felt the first section was a little slow, or maybe I just didn't like the man Ted was, his Orange County lifestyle or the people with whom he interacted. Reading further in the book, I realized it was necessary to get to know Ted and his life before Jeri, as well as hers before meeting Ted. I enjoyed the book even more once these characters meet. The book begins to really move, taking the reader along. The author has a gift for forming characters that jump off the page, making you really like, or sometimes REALLY dislike them. I also enjoyed the way Mr. Houts was able to, very smoothly, let me into the minds of the characters, while each was observing the same situation from their own particular point of view. The book is filled with wonderful descriptions of the various locations the characters inhabit. Never distracting, nor over powering the story, I could feel I was in Durango, Colorado on a cold ski slope; and later, in New Orleans experiencing the sights, smells, vibrations and exhilaration of Mardi Gras. The people are complex, the issues faced by them are the real issues of a society involved in a tug-of-war of values and technology. I encourage you to pick this book up and don't put it down, you won't be disappointed!
