Imagine a life without television, music or freedom; imagine every minute of your spare time being spent attending church; imagine growing up believing swimming pools, cinemas and dancing were evil. For members of the Exclusive Brethren, a strict religious sect, constraints such as these are normal. No member is allowed to eat in the same room as a ‘worldly’ person, they are forbidden from owning a pet and they are restricted from socialising with anyone outside of the Exclusive Brethren. Most members are so isolated within the sect that they can’t even imagine a life on the outside. But not all members can live such a controlled existence. Once David Tchappat had a taste of the real world as a teenager, there was no going back despite the fact he knew he would be cruelly ostracised from his family, friends and the only life he had known.
BreakoutHow I Escaped From The Exclusive Brethren eBook David Tchappat
This story of escape from a closed religious system kept me riveted to the end. I realize it's autobiography, so it is what it is, but I found myself at certain points practically yelling, See a therapist!! The many references to alcohol and hot chicks were tiresome but, I suppose, age appropriate for that time of his life. His modeling half nude in a calendar as an expression of his interest in charity fundraising may raise an eyebrow as well. However, again, the story is what it is. Nevertheless, I found myself wishing he'd do more to reach out to others in his predicament, perhaps at least found a support group for former EBs. All in all recommendable but could benefit from editing and deeper reflection, perhaps in a second edition.Product details

BreakoutHow I Escaped From The Exclusive Brethren eBook David Tchappat Reviews
HONEST It gave a good insight into the lives of the Brethren. I understand that not everyone has the same point of view but it proves to be very challenging for some.
This was a very good book about escaping from a cult. I enjoyed the insensity of the need to escape as well as the thought process and fear involved in making a go outside the sect. Well written, nicely paced and eye opening. I enjoyed the read of an inside look at a world that few of us know is out there and so severely effecting people's lives.
